Sandhills Wildlife & McLeod Peach Trees

•Misplaced in the Trees•

My next stop was supposed to be the Carolinas Sandhills Wildlife refuge. The GPS location for the refuge wasn’t even close to being accurate. It placed me on a large peach farm called McLeod where I became lost in contemplation. After a while, though I did finally stumble onto the correct location only to miss the best shot.

Just about any other time of the year would have been ideal for visiting McLeod. They have a pumpkin picking and corn maze earlier in the fall and of course lots of peaches in the summer. I’ll be honest with you, I never paid much attention to trees growing up. Even now I know very little. It is strange how that works. You can go your whole life without ever really seeing so much of the world around you.

It really always is at the most unnatural times that I have these little existential moments. I really was humbled by the beauty as I looked all around. I never saw a more beautiful field in my life and yet people drive up and down this road never stopping or wasting more than a cursory glance. The more that I get out and see the world the more that I realize that beauty is all around me.

It turned out that I was not alone in my failure. After reflecting on all those deeper aspects of life I started back for my car and ran into another also searching for the wildlife refuge as well. It happened to be not much further down. So remember, if you go looking yourself it is past the peach farm on the left.

My failures were far from finished once I found the refuge. I’ve never done much wildlife photography. I would like to someday, but for the most part, I am simply too impatient. The wanderlust sets in and before I know it I have missed a great shot. That is exactly the misfortune I experienced here. Right as I was moving to set up at a new spot, I saw a white-tailed deer jump right where I had been moments before.

All around I really liked the refuge and I think it is an awesome place to go for a variety of reasons. You can enjoy fishing, hunting, or wildlife viewing. Maybe you’ll go hiking or to bird watch. Whatever your reasons I am certain you will have a pleasant time. Just don’t get lost on the way.
