In the small town of Ware Shoals, you can find a good example of a company townhouse. This historic hotel was built by Ware Shoals Manufacturing Company in 1923 and is a lovely V-shaped brick building. The actual architectural design of the building is what I find the most fascinating. Few of its features are decorative and the influence of the Millowners can be felt in its design. Its main function was to provide housing for executives and travelers, but also the rapidly growing population of mill workers who often didn’t have sufficient housing in the immediate area.
Ware Shoals had few existing homes at the time and Millowners needed a place to house new workers and other businessmen affiliated with the company. However, this was far more than just an Inn, it was the center of village activity. That is why I would love to see a small collection of stories about what life was like. I wonder if anyone remembers what kinds of people lived here? I would love to hear any interesting stories about life in the Inn. If you happen to know anything more please do share.
