One of the oddest named community in the upstate and a fairly quiet place, may be on the verge of a renewal. I recently spoke with Cody Greenway, an ambitious entrepreneur who kickstarted the PK Country Store earlier this year. He was able to give me a great deal of information about the area. Some of the interesting things he shared with me include: That the local population has definitely increased over the years, that many people today are proud to say they’re from PK and that he expects an increase in business thanks to heavy traffic from highway 247.
“I think a lot of people decades ago had a stigma, now it is one of those quirky, special things that people like to share…. Business will eventually catch up. The Ware Place is definitely seeing that.” -Cody Greenway
I have to say that one question bugged me more than anything else. Why is it called “Possum Kingdom”!?!?!
Cody admitted that he wasn’t exactly sure and that he didn’t know if anyone knew for certain, but I did manage to get him to tell me what he believed was the most plausible way the area got its peculiar name. The story is said to involve a traveling sells man (called a drummer) that was passing through and saw a line of possums crossing the road. As he went from town to town the number of possums grew until the area until eventually it was known as Possum Kingdom.
Anyway, I found all this very fascinating and thought you might too. What do you think? Is Possum Kingdom back on the map? Do you know where this strange name comes from?
