In the heart of Greenville is the remains of what was once the largest cotton mill in the United States. This 4-story building brick building was built in 1902. An entire community popped up around the mill. Over 343 mill houses survive to this day, along with two churches and a baseball park. I thought it was pretty wild that they had a big enough community to need two separate churches.
The mill today is abandoned. Although several attempts at redevelopment have had false starts. That is something I find truly disappointing. If something isn’t done this location could be soon lost. Luckily, hope still exist for a redevelopment of Woodside Mill. Plans have been filed by Woodside Mill Properties LLC to develop the building into over 300 apartments.
I hope that this happens. I would hate to see the largest cotton mill ever destroyed like so many others.
