Kilgore-Lewis House

Kilgore-Lewis is a pretty old house. It wasn’t always where you can find it today either. Thanks to the Garden Club, yeah the garden club, the house was actually moved so it could be preserved instead of demolished. They managed to raise over $100,000, that must have been a ton of bake sales. Now it sits over at McPherson Park. Who’d have thought that a gardening group would have so much gumption? I guess I’ll never underestimate a bunch of perky planters ever again.

Anyway, Kilgore is really old. In fact, it is one of the oldest homes in Greenville County. It was built way back in 1838 by Josiah Kilgore as a wedding present for his daughter, Mary. It stayed as a family home for 130 years. Nowadays it is used mainly for weddings and is open for touring. When I visited they were setting up for what looked like one competitive, high-stakes evening of Bridge.

Maybe I should put on a wide-brimmed straw hat and some old clothes. This Garden Club doesn’t mess around.
